Jupiter Enters Cancer - Symbolism and Importance of Jupiter

On the 19th of June, Jupiter will enter Cancer, its exalted sign, where it will remain for the next year. In terms of physical traits, Jupiter is the biggest planet in our solar system (it is ten times bigger than Earth). Therefore, calling Jupiter ‘the mighty planet’ is explained by this physical trait as well, and not only because of its influence on our lives. From an astrological point of view, Jupiter is considered in Vedic astrology the Guru of Devtaas or the Holy Gods. Jupiter has a positive influence on all signs and Houses, as it increases positive energies and neutralizes the negative impact that other planets may have on us.

As it transits through the zodiac, Jupiter stays for a relatively long period of time in each sign before continuing its movement. Its position at any given moment (i.e. sign and/or House) determines the effects it has on people during the respective period of transit.

Referring back to Vedic astrology, in Indian mythology Jupiter is considered the teacher of the holy Gods, being called the Lord of wisdom and knowledge. Various things associated with this planet are teachers, wealth, fame, astronomy, procreation, gemstones, the yellow color, temples, trust, intellect, etc. In Vedic astrology, Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces. This planet is given the role of a minister in the solar system. It is a masculine planet. It stands for happiness and knowledge. Brahmins – Hindu priests – believe that Jupiter exalts holiness and a pure environment.

In graphic depictions, Jupiter has an imposing body, yellow eyes, and dry hair. In terms of psychological traits, it is intelligent, its knowledge spanning various fields and areas of study.  This planet is associated with fat in the body and a sweet taste. It is said that it resides in safes and in treasures, and that it becomes most powerful while it is in the East. Regarding astrological principles, there isn’t any other planet as strong as Jupiter. Ganesha says that the presence of this mighty planet in the Ascendant Sign or in one of the cardinal Houses limits the other negative planetary influences in an individual’s natal chart.

Jupiter’s sign of exaltation is Cancer. The fourth sign in the Zodiac, Cancer symbolizes home and native place. Cancer people are naturally inclined to take care of others and they are really good at it. Furthermore, the Lord of Cancer is the Moon, which stands for both mind and mother, so this is what explains the motherly instincts of the Cancer natives.

As the past ruler of my Sun-sign (Pisces) and the ruler of my Ascendant (Sag), Jupiter plays a large role in my own natal chart.
