Mundane comes from the Roman word 'mundus' which means "world." The study of this astrology is called Mundane or Political astrology which brings answers regarding, for example, a revolution of a country and other such signifying changes. It is a descendant of one of the oldest branches of astrology, the judicial astrology. Based on the major events or happenings of the country, birth charts can also be created for the respective country. A declaration of independence or the ending of a world war are a few of the events in history which are taken into account for such country natal charts, where the houses govern various factors of the country.
The rules are too intricate to admit a clear definition and too contradictory to be easily reconciled. Till recently the predictions in mundane astrology were limited to or dealt with very few fields, such as politics of a country. They were mainly short term predictions and if they were more elaborate, then they dealt with questions of war and peace on a continental or world scale. Although it was originally developed in ancient Babylon there have been three subsequent major periods of development. This ancient branch of astrology which was originally developed in ancient Babylon laid its foundation when it got its fundamentals set in the treaties of Tetrabiblos in 120 AD by a Greek astrologer, Claudius Ptolemy. In the 9th century, Islamic astrologers studied the ups and downs of a nation by relying on the cycles of Jupiter and Saturn. This led to the second phase of development in mundane astrology. In the 20th century there was a major proliferation of techniques in which planetary cycles and their influence on the natal chart where taken into account. This, in turn, led to yet another phase of development in mundane astrology, the third one.
There are different approaches by which we can study the mundane astrology. In olden days, the most ancient method of associating incidents like geological occurrences - such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, etc. - and astronomical incidents was based on the movements of celestial bodies in the Solar System. The latest method focuses on the horoscopes of a nation which takes into consideration facts like the time and date of a country's independence.
In mundane astrology, the signs and the planets in the natal chart of a country are thought to be factors of major importance when it comes to influencing the respective country's political stability, financial position, natural calamities, and relationship with other countries. All these things are studied by doing readings that rely on the planetary movements which directly impact the different houses and signs. However, mundane astrology does not resume itself to only creating the birth chart of the country, but it also takes into consideration the natal charts of the rulers (or other political executives) of that country.
